About the City Dreams project |
|
"My aim is to take photos in thirty cities around the world. The procedure is always the same: First I read texts by local authors and speak with residents. After that I look for places representative of that particular city. Once I've found the places I choose an angle through the viewfinder and install myself in a open/public space. I compose the background first, without people, as this gives me easier control over the composition as a whole. Once this is done I wait until a city dweller steps into the picture. If I release the shutter at the right moment, the momentary coming together of person and place can produce astounding results, precisely because it's only controllable to a certain extent. What interests me is not spectacular scenes, but people going about their everyday business. I would describe the technique I use for my work as ‚staged coincidences'.
I intend to show the City Dream series in each of the cities where the pictures were taken. And in this way, perhaps, the cities can also start to get to know each other." (Sabine Felber, 2002)
